Donghuangshui Goddess Temple
Donghuangshui Goddess Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Taiyuan City.
Donghuangshui Goddess Temple is located in the eastern part of Donghuangshui Village, Donghuangshui Town, Yangqu County. The year of its establishment is unknown, but the existing main structure dates back to the Qing Dynasty. Facing south and situated on a north-south axis, the temple features a single-courtyard layout, measuring 32.9 meters in width from east to west and 53.2 meters in length from north to south, covering an area of approximately 1,751 square meters.
Along the central axis, from south to north, there are a side hall and the main hall, with wing rooms, side halls, upper courtyard wing rooms, and east-west side chambers of the main hall arranged on the eastern and western sides.
Side Hall: Facing north, it has three bays in width and four rafters in depth, with a single-eave hanging gable roof covered with tubular and flat tiles, and gray clay ridge ornaments. The front eaves’ decorative elements are entirely missing. The original painted beams and brackets inside the hall are still preserved.
Main Hall: Built on a stone foundation, 0.16 meters high. It has a total width of 10.22 meters and a total depth of 8.94 meters. The hall features three bays in width and five rafters in depth, with a single-eave hanging gable roof, though the main ridge ornament is missing. Originally constructed with a six-rafter front corridor structure, during the period when it was used as a school, the partitions between the interior columns were removed, walls were built in the corridor section, and modern doors and windows were installed. Inside the hall, ink paintings covering 5 square meters remain at the roof apex.
Lower Courtyard East-West Wing Rooms: These have five bays in width and four rafters in depth, with a single-eave flush gable roof covered with tubular tiles and floral-patterned ridges. The central bay features a window flanked by a door, while the side and end bays have no surviving decorative elements. During later occupation, internal partition walls were added.
East-West Side Halls: These have five bays in width and four rafters in depth, with a single-eave flush gable roof and floral-patterned ridges. The decorative elements are missing, the roof tiles are severely damaged, and some sections have partially collapsed.
Upper Courtyard East-West Wing Rooms: Located on the east and west sides of the upper courtyard, these are three-bay structures. The front wall has been modified.
East-West Side Chambers: These are four-bay structures with a single-eave flush gable roof, covered with tubular tiles and gray clay ridge ornaments. The front eaves’ decorative elements have been modified.
Donghuangshui Village: Donghuangshui Village is located ten kilometers due east of Yangqu County’s county town, at the foot of Hongshan and Weishan mountains. It is the seat of the Donghuangshui Town government and classified as a plains village within the county. The village committee comprises four natural villages: Shigou East, Jiaxi, Bozigou, and Beishe, with 16 villager groups divided among 8 grid zones. The village has a total of 84 Party members, 1,125 households, and a population of 2,634, including 1,042 laborers.
