Amman Roman Theater

The Roman Theater is situated at the foot of Amman Citadel in the old city area and was built in the 2nd century AD. The entire building is nestled against the hillside, and its design is very similar to that of the Roman Theater in Jerash, Jordan. It is circular in shape and could seat 6,000 people. During its construction, builders skillfully applied acoustic principles so that sounds such as singing, recitation, and speeches from the stage can be clearly heard from any seat in the theater. Moreover, if you stand in the center of the theater and speak, you can hear your own voice echoing back from above. Adjacent to the theater are the “Folklore Museum” and the “Museum of Popular Traditions.” Currently, the theater serves not only as a major tourist attraction in Amman but also as an important venue for hosting cultural and artistic events.
