Nan Ya Shang Site

The Nan Ya Shang Site is a cultural heritage protection unit of Taiyuan City.

The Nan Ya Shang Site is located on Nan Ya Shang, about 1.5 kilometers south of Datunzhuang Village, Huangzhai Town, Yangqu County. The site stretches approximately 230 meters from east to west and 220 meters from north to south, covering a total area of about 50,600 square meters.

Two cultural layers and one ash pit have been found in the exposed sections of the site. Cultural Layer 1 is located on the northwest cliff of the site, measuring about 29 meters in length and 1–1.5 meters in thickness. It has been broken into several segments due to rain erosion, and fragments of gray pottery jars with rope patterns from the Xia Dynasty, made of clayey and sandy materials, have been collected. Cultural Layer 2 is situated on the northeast cliff of the site, about 7 meters long and 1.2 meters thick, where fragments of gray pottery jars with rope patterns from the Xia Dynasty, made of sandy clay, were collected. The ash pit is located on the north cliff of the site, with an opening 3.5 meters wide, a base 2 meters wide, and a depth of 1.1 meters. Fragments of gray pottery jars with rope patterns from the Xia Dynasty, made of clayey and sandy materials, were also collected here. On the surface, fragments of gray pottery baskets with basketry patterns from the Longshan Culture period, as well as lug handles, and leg parts of tripod cauldrons (li) made of sandy gray pottery from the Xia Dynasty, were found.

The site is situated on a terrace on the southern bank of the Zhongshe River, with Dongzhai Gully to the west. The surface of the site is mainly cultivated land, with larger gullies on the eastern and western sides, and severe rain erosion along the edges of the terrace.

The local area lies in the flat plains of northern Huangzhai Town, with Qizi Mountain to the west and Hong?_ Mountain to the east. It has a warm temperate continental monsoon climate, with an average annual temperature of 8.8°C, average annual precipitation of 458 mm, a frost-free period of 159 days, abundant sunshine, and distinct seasons.

Huangzhai Town: Huangzhai Town is the seat of Yangqu County government and serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of the county. The town administers 17 administrative villages and 37 natural villages, with a total of 7,635 households and a population of 48,484. It covers a total area of 109.6 square kilometers, including 51,700 mu of arable land. It is located 18 kilometers south of the provincial capital Taiyuan and 49 kilometers north of Xinzhou. The Dayun National Highway 108, the Yuan-Tai Expressway, and the Beitongpu Railway all run through the town, making transportation very convenient. The area enjoys prominent geographical advantages, ample water resources, and fertile land. The local people are known for their simple and kind nature.
