Aktobe
Introduction to Attractions A city in northwestern Kazakhstan and the capital of Aktobe Region. It is located on the left bank of the Ilek River, a tributary of the Ural River. Population: 231,000 (1985). Established as a military fortress in 1869 and became a city in 1891. It lies on the Orenburg–Tashkent railway line and is near chromium ore deposits.
Features
Home to large ferroalloy and chromium compound plants (producing, among others, heavy-sodium and -anhydride), as well as facilities for X-ray equipment, agricultural machinery, knitted underwear, and food processing. The city also hosts higher education institutions, a local history museum, and a planetarium.
