Merimbum Lake Park

Merimbum Lake Park is Brunei's largest and most well-known park, as well as the country’s only national heritage site recognized by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Covering an area of 8,000 hectares, the park boasts dense forests and a variety of flowers that bloom vibrantly alongside green leaves. The park is also populated with many water birds, reptiles, and mammals, adding lively energy to the environment.

The residents of the Merimbum area are primarily the Dusun people, an indigenous Malay ethnic group. Legend has it that over 100 years ago, a man named Imbun was hunting in the area when he discovered a beautiful lake surrounded by picturesque scenery. The lake was abundant with fish and shrimp, and the nearby forest was teeming with wildlife. He decided to bring his family and fellow villagers to settle there and establish a new home. In his honor, the place was named Merimbum, and the beautiful lake became what is known today as Merimbum Lake. Within the lake are two small islands. Visitors can rent a wooden boat to explore the islands or cross a long wooden bridge to reach the island in the center of the lake, which is equipped with various picnic facilities designed to enhance visitors’ enjoyment.
