The Santo Niño Statue

The Santo Niño Statue is located in the convent of the parish in Cebu City, Cebu Province. It is a revered Santo Niño statue of the Philippine Roman Catholic Church and the oldest religious relic in the Philippines. The statue was crafted in Belgium, and on April 14, 1521, Magellan presented it to Juana as a baptismal gift.

The Santo Niño is dressed in costly woven garments and wears a golden crown, all donated by devout believers from the Philippines and abroad. The statue is held in such high esteem because during the great fire that razed Cebu in 1565, it was the only object left unscathed. Locals regarded this as a miracle and began to worship the statue, which became the city’s patron saint. Every Sunday morning, numerous worshippers come bearing incense and candles to pray devoutly for peace and good fortune.

As the most revered cultural and religious statue in the Philippines, the third Sunday of January each year is designated as the Feast Day of the Santo Niño. On this day, at dawn, the statue is paraded through the streets, drawing massive crowds that line the roads, all eager to catch a glimpse of it. The scene is truly spectacular.
