Attraction Introduction

About a one-hour drive inland from Sur will take you to the Wahiba Sand (Wahiba Desert), which spans approximately 200 kilometers in length and 80 kilometers in width. The ever-changing colors and shifting dunes are unlike anything visitors have ever seen. Riding in a jeep and hurtling down sand dunes dozens of meters high, with both people and vehicle bouncing along the undulating terrain—this is the thrilling activity known as "dune bashing."

The desert is also home to some drought-resistant plants, which serve as food for camels and other livestock. For centuries, the Bedouins have led a nomadic life in the harsh environment of the Wahiba Desert, moving with the water and grazing grounds. You can visit these nomadic families, who will warmly welcome guests with Arabic coffee and dates as a gesture of hospitality. Sometimes, you may even get to try freshly squeezed goat or camel milk.

Since there are no fixed entry or exit routes in the desert, visitors who wish to drive into the desert area should be accompanied by a local guide who is familiar with the terrain and skilled in driving to prevent getting lost. Alternatively, inform local police or friends of your plans and expected return time.

It’s also essential to bring ample food and water as a precaution. If you plan to camp in the desert, be prepared for extreme temperature differences between day and night.
