The Muscat City Gate Museum is located on Saidiya Street in the administrative center of Muscat. Opened to the public in 2001, this museum is different from most others—while typical museums are built from the ground up, the City Gate Museum was constructed atop a city gate, with vehicles passing beneath and the museum for visitors situated above.

The City Gate Museum showcases Oman’s history from the Neolithic Age to the present, including the old city gate and a section of reinforced city wall. The museum’s special collections feature an ancient well, hot springs in Muscat, underground passages, markets, houses, churches, coastal areas, and castles. After exploring the exhibits, visitors can also enjoy scenic views of the city from the elevated gate—offering the best of both worlds. The museum is open from Saturday to Thursday.
