Fort Mirani

Fort Mirani was built in the 16th century during the Portuguese occupation of Oman. It is a fort in the Portuguese architectural style, standing majestically in a position that corresponds to Fort Jalali across the bay. Fort Mirani and Fort Jalali are the guardians of Muscat; during wartime, any invasion of the city had to pass through these two forts.

Fort Mirani is a defensive fortress built during the Portuguese colonial period. Perched on steep cliffs, it enjoys a commanding height, offering excellent conditions both for attack and defense due to its prime location. The fort made great contributions to safeguarding Muscat’s security, although it has since been repurposed for various uses. Currently, the fort may still serve military functions, with its interior off-limits to visitors. However, tourists can admire its striking silhouette from the shoreline and take photos of the castle from below.
