Langkawi Bat Cave

The Bat Cave is located in Langkawi, Kedah, and is about 60 meters long. Its name comes from the bats that reside in the cave. Three species of bats live here: the Southeast Asian horse-shoe bat, the intermediate horse-shoe bat, and the long-winged bat. The Southeast Asian horse-shoe bat is widely distributed across the Malay Peninsula and can be spotted in this cave. The large population of bats residing in the cave is due to its suitable temperature and humidity, which are ideal for their growth and reproduction.

Visitors need to take a boat to reach the Bat Cave. Inside, it’s pitch dark, with numerous bats hanging from the cavern walls, fast asleep — appearing very peaceful and serene. Tourists, worried about disturbing their slumber, are careful when pressing the camera shutter. However, the bats are extremely alert and still get startled, suddenly taking off like a black whirlwind with eerie screeches echoing through the cave. The scene is quite spectacular, but also sends chills down your spine.
