It is a revolutionary historical memorial site with a proud tradition. From serving as a meeting place for radical thinkers in the Ming Dynasty who commented on politics, to where Dr. Sun Yat-sen advocated for revolution in the first year of the Republic of China, giving speeches on eradicating old ideas and building a new country; from the student movement against the housing tax in 1925, to the anti-imperialist demonstrations in support of the May 30th Incident in Shanghai; from the Sacrifice League for Shanxi’s resistance against Japan, to the Shanxi Socialist Youth League founded by Gao Junyu; from the activities of the Shanxi branch of the Chinese Communist Party led by veteran revolutionaries such as [Name], to the wartime propaganda speeches delivered by [Name] — all took place here.

Today, Wenyuan Lake features the earliest post-establishment commemorative structure — the Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Tower; the Guangxu 31st Year (1905) Industrial Promotion Exhibition Hall — the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall; the former site of the Provincial No. 1 Middle School — the site of the Taiyuan Branch of the Chinese Communist Party; the Ziming Library built by Yan Xishan in 1937 during the Republic of China — the Wanzi Building, as well as a Qing Dynasty glazed pagoda. Together, they form an important cluster of modern historical sites centered around Wenyuan Lake.
