Lake Soyang

A lake formed during the construction of the East Asia’s largest reservoir, the Soyang River Dam, in 1973, it is the largest artificial lake in South Korea in terms of surface area and water storage capacity. With recently opened routes connecting to areas such as Chuncheon, Yanggu, and Inje, it has been dubbed “the sea in the middle of the land.” Known as the largest-scale fish farm and freshwater fish museum, Lake Soyang is home to over 50 species of freshwater fish including sweetfish, trout, carp, eel, and icefish. The valleys around the lake are ideal for fishing, and ice fishing in winter is particularly famous. Nearby, you can also find the Goryeo-era Cheongpyeongsa Temple and the Odaesan Mountain, known for its peculiar rocks. The Yanggu area features the Yanggu Prehistoric Museum, the Fourth Site, the Uijuro Lookout, the War Memorial, the Palrang Waterfall, the Hugok Spring, the Cheonmi Valley, the Wolmyeong Valley, the Suiryeok Stream, and the Yanggu Palrang Folk Museum. Located upstream of Lake Soyang, the Yeongwol area offers sites such as the Gyeongjeongjeong Pavilion, the Hejangjeong Pavilion, Mount Naeseorak, and the Naelyeongcheon Stream. The dam also features not only a cruise boat dock but also various convenience facilities.

Transportation: 1. Take bus No. 12-1 from Chuncheon Station to the city bus terminal, then transfer to bus No. 12 at Namsunchuncheon; or take city bus No. 11 or 12 from the long-distance bus terminal to Soyang Dam Station, about a 30-minute ride. 2. A taxi ride from Chuncheon Station to Lake Soyang takes about 30 minutes.
