Situated around 80 kilometers north of Seoul and about 10 kilometers southwest of Chuncheon, Samgye Mountain is close to the Gyeongchun Highway, offering easy access and making it a frequent destination for Seoul residents. The mountain is scattered with rugged rocks and a network of small and large waterfalls — starting from the 10-meter-high First Waterfall, through the Second and Third Waterfalls, and then passing Fairy Pool, you eventually reach the highest peak of Samgye Mountain (654 meters above sea level). The hiking trails here are relatively gentle, making it very suitable for climbing enthusiasts, with the journey from the base to the summit taking only two to three hours. With streams murmuring through valleys and lush trees all around, the view from the top reveals the western valley that resembles a multi-island sea — an exceptionally beautiful sight that captivates visitors and makes them linger.

The main rock type composing Samgye Mountain is a kind of siliceous rock, formed about 570 million to 2.5 billion years ago when now-extinct sandstone was subjected to high temperature and pressure. From the summit, one can overlook the North Han River. Leveraging its steep terrain as a naturally fortified stronghold, the area preserves remnants of the Samgye Mountain Fortress walls and palace sites built during the ancient Mahan period, along with numerous temples — a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage.
