Heunginjimun Gate

Heunginjimun Gate is a gate located in Jongno District, Seoul. It was completed in 1396 and designated as Korea's Treasure No. 1 on January 21, 1963. It is said that during the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910), the royal court built eight gates around Hanyang (the former name of Seoul, referring to the city center at that time) to protect important national facilities. Heunginjimun is the central eastern gate among them, and is therefore often referred to as Dongdaemun (East Gate).

The elegant and intricate design of Heunginjimun Gate has captured the attention of many, showcasing the architectural style of the late Joseon period in full splendor. Unlike the other seven gates, Heunginjimun features a fortress wall, or "ongseong" — a small walled structure built around a gate to conceal it from outside view, primarily for defensive purposes. Due to its location on relatively flat terrain, Heunginjimun was more vulnerable to enemy attacks compared to other gates, so the ongseong was added to strengthen its defenses. In addition to improving security, the fortress wall also enhances the gate’s visual appeal.

The night view of Heunginjimun is particularly stunning, and the area is surrounded by the 24-hour commercial shopping district of Dongdaemun Market, as well as the under-construction Dongdaemun Design Plaza & Park. Visitors can enjoy the illuminated gate at night before heading to the nearby fashion district for some shopping.
