Bukchon Hanok Village

Bukchon refers to a village located between Gyeongbokgung Palace (a royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty) and Changdeokgung Palace (another Joseon-era royal palace), situated in Jongno District, Seoul. It is world-renowned for its traditional Korean houses, or hanok, and traditional Korean architectural-style cottages. In 2009, Bukchon Hanok Village received the Award of Distinction under the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation, recognizing its outstanding achievements in the restoration of historic hanok.

During the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910), the ruling class largely resided in Bukchon, leaving behind many traditional houses. Today, Bukchon is home to over 900 hanok. It is not only a living village but also a popular tourist destination. With the addition of hanok galleries, traditional workshops, and hanok restaurants, the area has become a notable new cultural and arts district. Visitors can also explore traditional Korean culture museums such as the “Gaya Museum,” “Han Sang-soo Embroidery Museum,” and “Korean Buddhist Art Museum,” earning acclaim among foreign tourists as well.
