The Bukchon Museum of Oriental Culture is located in Jongno-gu, Seoul, and is an affiliated museum of the Bukchon Hanok Village. It was formerly the residence of Meng Sicheong, a descendant of a renowned and incorruptible prime minister from the Joseon Dynasty. The museum not only displays cultural relics related to Confucianism, Buddhism, and folk traditions but also features a “Traditional Hanok Study Room” where visitors can experience the atmosphere of a traditional Korean private academy.

Situated in Jongno-gu, Seoul, the Bukchon Museum of Oriental Culture is an affiliate of the Bukchon Hanok Village. Originally the home of Meng Sicheong, a descendant of a distinguished and upright prime minister from the Joseon era, the museum showcases cultural artifacts related to Confucianism, Buddhism, and folk culture. It also includes a “Traditional Hanok Study Room” that offers visitors an immersive experience of a classic Korean scholarly atmosphere. With its rich content and diverse exhibits, it is an excellent place to explore Asian culture, especially that of Korea.

Climbing up the alleys of the Bukchon Hanok Village toward a small hill brings you to the Bukchon Museum of Oriental Culture. The front of the museum features a dragon mural hand-carved by Director Kwon Young-du, and the walls are built with old roof tiles. The museum is surrounded by three gates: the Chasing the Distant Gate, the Reverence Gate, and the Ascension to Immortality Gate, representing Confucianism, Buddhism, and Zen respectively. Inside, there are three exhibition rooms: the first displays the Four Treasures of the Study used by Korean and Chinese scholars, along with calligraphy, paintings, ceramics, and furniture by famous literati; the second exhibits Buddhist artworks from Korea, China, and South Asia; and the third primarily features Korean ethnic art pieces.

The Bukchon Museum of Oriental Culture is not only a destination for appreciating Asian art and culture but also offers a fantastic view, as it is situated at the highest point in the Bukchon Hanok Village. From the second-floor balcony, you can enjoy panoramic views of the entire city of Seoul.
