Dongdaemun is Cultural Heritage No. 1. Originally named Heunginjimun, it was the eastern gate of Seoul’s city wall. Construction began in 1396 during the reign of King Taejo, and it was renovated in 1453 during the reign of King Danjong. The current gate tower was rebuilt in 1869 under King Gojong. It is said that the name Heunginjimun originated during the reign of King Sejo (1455–1468). Nowadays, it is commonly known as Dongdaemun, but many people still refer to it as Heunginjimun in an effort to restore its original name.

The most distinctive feature of Dongdaemun is the Ujeongchong (encircling wall) that surrounds the gate. The Ujeongchong is a semi-circular fortress wall built to enclose the main gate. Due to the relatively low elevation of the area, which made it difficult to defend against invaders, the Ujeongchong was constructed as a defensive measure. Considering the terrain, this design can be seen as quite rational. The stones of the Ujeongchong now display varying colors due to renovation work.

At the center of the stone axis is the Hongyimun (rainbow gate), above which stands a two-story gate tower. The front of the tower has five bays, and the sides have two, with a hip-and-gable roof. Above the eaves, there are carvings of various animals believed to ward off evil spirits—an intriguing detail. The architectural details of Dongdaemun are relatively soft and decorative, reflecting the typical architectural style of the late Joseon Dynasty.

Dongdaemun Market was established in 1905. Since being designated as a fashion wholesale district, it has grown at an astonishing rate. It is said that around 30 shopping malls, over 30,000 stores, and more than 50,000 manufacturers gather here, making Dongdaemun a bustling commercial hub that every Seoulite must visit, as well as one of the largest wholesale markets in Asia. Today, the market offers everything from small trendy accessories to ginseng, tableware, clothing, toys, jewelry, and more. Generally, prices are lower than elsewhere, which is why it is always crowded with retailers from regional cities and foreign tourists.
