Kakunodate

Kakunodate is a town located in Semboku City, Akita Prefecture, in the northeastern region of Japan. Covering a total area of 156.63 square kilometers, it is world-renowned for its well-preserved samurai residences and beautiful cherry blossoms, making it a globally celebrated tourist destination. The town still retains a strong atmosphere of the Edo period. It is divided into northern and southern sections by a firebreak zone located at its narrowest central part, with the northern side known as the Inner Town (Samurai Town) and the southern side referred to as the Outer Town (Merchants' Town).

Within the Samurai Town, many neatly arranged samurai residences are still preserved. Among them, the oldest residence, the Ishiguro family home, has its main building, gate, walls, and earthen storehouse all maintained in their original condition. It is the only residence where visitors can enter the main building and tour the interior. Walking along the Samurai Residence Avenue, visitors can see 400 beautiful weeping cherry trees, including some aged 300 and 250 years old, with 152 of them designated as national natural monuments. Every year in late April, the cherry blossoms bloom in unison here. The black wooden fences of the samurai houses contrast beautifully with the pink blossoms, creating an exquisite and continuous landscape that makes this one of Japan’s most famous cherry blossom viewing spots, earning it the nickname “Little Kyoto of Tohoku.”
