Koan Gorge

Koan Gorge is located in Yuzawa City in the southern part of Akita Prefecture in Japan’s northeastern region. It is an approximately 8-kilometer-long valley formed by the erosion of Mount Koan by the violent flow of the Kase River, and attracts tourists from around the world with its breathtaking scenery.

Koan Gorge is a precious gift bestowed upon Yuzawa by nature, showcasing the incredible power of the natural world everywhere you look: its upper reaches feature the “Koan Gorge Great Boiling Pot,” where heat and steam erupt abundantly from cracks in the cliff, also known as the “Hell Cauldron” due to the approximately 10 tons of hot spring water that gush out from the cliff fissures every hour; the “Koan Gorge Onsen Town” at the foot of the mountain has been renowned since ancient times as one of Japan’s most famous hot spring areas; a walking trail runs along the gorge, allowing visitors to closely admire its wondrous scenery—especially in autumn when the mountainsides blaze with red foliage, making it a spectacular spot for leaf-peeping.
