Mount Hyuga

Mount Hyuga is a volcano located in Yahiko Village, Nishikasugai District, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. Situated on the Sea of Japan side of the Echigo Plain, its striking form rising directly from the coast gives it a unique presence. It is one of the most well-known volcanoes in Niigata Prefecture. The entire mountain is embraced by the sea and plains, offering visitors expansive views of its beautiful scenery.

On the eastern foothills of Mount Hyuga lies Yahiko Shrine, the guardian shrine of the Echigo Plain region and a site of reverence since ancient times. With a long history, it is mentioned in poems from the Man’yōshū, Japan’s oldest anthology of poetry from the latter half of the 7th to the latter half of the 8th century. The shrine buildings were reconstructed in the 20th century. The shrine grounds are lush with trees, and among them are historic structures such as the worship hall, treasure hall, and dance hall, which appear even more solemn and majestic under the cover of green pines and cypresses. At the summit of Mount Hyuga, there is also a park that features restaurants and recreational facilities for visitors to relax. Moreover, from the top, visitors can enjoy panoramic views, taking in the vast expanse of the Sea of Japan.

To facilitate visitors’ climbs, Mount Hyuga offers various facilities such as hiking trails, cable cars, and sightseeing roads, allowing guests to choose their preferred way to ascend the mountain.
