Senboku Onsen

Senboku Onsen is located in Murakami City, the northernmost part of Niigata Prefecture, and was discovered by accident during oil drilling in the early 20th century. The onsen faces the Sea of Japan and is known for offering the experience of soaking in hot springs while enjoying pine forests, sunsets over the Sea of Japan, and delicious local cuisine such as salmon and seafood — a perfect combination of soaking, sightseeing, and gourmet dining.

From JR East (East Japan Railway Company) Murakami Station, visitors can reach the Senboku Onsen area in just seven minutes along a beautiful coastal route, where numerous hot spring ryokan are lined up. Although Senboku Onsen has its own unique charm throughout all four seasons, winter is particularly popular with tourists. This is because both sea fish and seafood are at their freshest and most flavorful in the cold months, and when paired with the region’s famous sake, they make for an exceptional culinary experience. Beyond the food, the scenery in winter is also distinctive. It is said that Akiko Yosano, a renowned poet, writer, and thinker active during Japan’s Meiji and Showa periods, visited Senboku Onsen in February 1938 and was so moved by its beauty that she composed 45 tanka poems in praise of it — despite staying for only a single day.
