Northern Culture Museum

The Northern Culture Museum, also known as the Mansion of Wealthy Farmers, is located in Niigata City, the capital of Niigata Prefecture on Japan's main island of Honshu. Originally the residence of the Ito family, a former wealthy farming household in Niigata Prefecture, it is now open to the public as a museum. The soot-stained beams, dark and shiny pillars, and wooden floors preserved within the museum still retain their original appearance, showcasing the once-prosperous and affluent lifestyle of the Ito family.

The Ito residence spans an area of 29,000 square meters, with a total floor space of 3,960 square meters. It is a purely Japanese-style house divided into 65 rooms from the main building. The entire estate was fortified with battlefield defense structures to protect against external threats. In addition to perimeter walls, a moat was dug around the outside, extending from the pillars on both sides of the main gate along the boulevard to the front garden dozens of meters away. The entrance gate was entirely constructed from beech wood in the distinctive mountain-style architecture unique to Japanese castles and temples, highlighting the grandeur and luxurious splendor of the Ito residence.

The Ito residence passed through the hands of the fifth, sixth, and seventh generations of the Ito family. In 1946 (Showa 21), the seventh-generation owner established the property as the Foundation for the Promotion of Historic Sites and Culture. In 1949 (Showa 24), it was renamed the Northern Culture Museum, and the entire Ito property was donated. Visitors can imagine the luxurious life of the Ito family here, and also learn about the lives of farmers at the time through the later-built residential buildings.
