Kita-in Temple is located in Koshiba, Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture, Japan, and is one of the most iconic temples representing Kawagoe. It serves as the regional head temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism. The origins of Kita-in date back to 830 when the eminent monk Jikaku Daishi Ennin founded Muryōju-ji Temple on Mount Hoshino. In 1599, under the profound trust of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the temple flourished further.

Within the temple grounds of Kita-in stand over 500 Rakan statues, making it one of Japan’s Three Great Rakan Temples. Throughout the year, the temple hosts a variety of religious activities, among which the most famous is the “Kawagoe Daishi” ceremony, believed to ward off disasters and bring good fortune. Every day, many worshippers gather here. Visitors can also purchase a wide range of amulets, including paper charms, talismans, plaques, and omikuji (fortune slips), all said to help avert great misfortunes, ensure household safety, prosperity in business, and protection from disasters and safeguard family assets. The temple also features a souvenir shop offering local specialties and delicacies from both Kita-in and Kawagoe, perfect as gifts for friends and family.

Travelers should note that Kita-in is a sacred religious site. Please keep quiet inside the main hall, and refrain from taking photos, videos, touching exhibits, or entering the inner garden without permission.
