The Sleeping Giant Garden

The Sleeping Giant Garden (Garden of the Sleeping Giant) is located at the foot of Fiji’s Nausori Highlands, not far north of Nadi. It was originally a private garden founded in 1977 by American “Wheelchair Detective” TV star Raymond Burr. Initially, the garden was not well known, but as more tropical orchids were planted, it has now become one of the most popular tourist attractions on Fiji.

Although famous for its orchids, the Sleeping Giant Garden also boasts an intriguing shape that captivates visitors. From a distance, the entire garden resembles a giant with deep facial features, lying on its back with a large belly characteristic of locals, fast asleep — hence the name of the garden.

Spanning 20 hectares, this botanical garden is home to approximately 2,000 different varieties of orchids, including some rare, endemic Fijian species, making it the largest orchid garden in Fiji. In addition, the garden also cultivates many tropical plants, as well as thirty to forty kinds of precious Asian lotuses. Strolling along the garden’s nature-filled country paths surrounded by jungle, you’ll come across large lotus ponds that dot the landscape like jewels. With fragrant pathways, a variety of vibrant orchids in full bloom, it’s truly a visual delight.
