Paparoa National Park

Paparoa National Park is located on the west coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Established in 1987, it covers an area of 306 square kilometers and is renowned for its limestone karst landforms, which the park was created to protect.

Paparoa National Park features a complete landscape and ecosystem, ranging from the granite and gneiss of the Paparoa Range to the layered rock formations of Punakaiki. It comprises subtropical and temperate rainforests, towering mountains, lowland wetlands, and bizarre coastal scenery. The park dazzles visitors with its rugged ridges, dramatic river canyons, intricate cave formations, and pancake-flat coastal landforms. Its pristine ecosystems remain well-preserved, with notable flora such as nikau palms, northern rātā, cabbage trees, daisies, and gentians, as well as habitats for many rare bird species.

Visitors can explore jagged limestone caves, stroll along the Truman Track, kayak through fast-flowing rivers, picnic in romantic gorges, go birdwatching in the rainforest, and adventure through lush forests — each activity offers a captivating glimpse into the raw and untamed beauty of nature.
