Milford Sound

Milford Sound is located on the South Island in the southwestern part of New Zealand and is the most accessible and beautiful of all the country’s fiords. Rudyard Kipling once called it one of the eight wonders of the world, and it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990. The Milford Sound area has preserved much of New Zealand’s pristine natural beauty, featuring ancient rainforests covered with large tree ferns and serving as a sanctuary for rare and endangered wildlife.

The region receives an annual rainfall of 6,813 mm, making it one of the wettest inhabited areas in New Zealand and the world. Due to the high precipitation, numerous temporary waterfalls form in the alpine gorges, cascading dramatically into the fiord. New Zealand’s largest national park—Fiordland National Park, the Milford Sound Marine Reserve, and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Site are all situated within Milford Sound. With its stunning landscapes, Milford Sound attracts over a million visitors each year, making it New Zealand’s busiest tourist destination.
