The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are located in the Waitomo Caves region of Waikato in central North Island, New Zealand, and are world-renowned for their underground caverns and glowworms. They are one of the most mysterious natural attractions in the Waikato region, drawing millions of visitors each year.

The Waitomo Glowworm Caves were formed around 15,000 years ago. Beneath the surface, layers of limestone form an extensive network of caves adorned with a variety of stalactites, stalagmites, and glowworms. Some of these caves are open to the public, while others are reserved for expert research. Typically, visitors take a guided boat ride along an underground river. As you glide through the pitch-dark caverns accompanied by the gentle sound of water, you’ll soon notice flickers of light on the water’s surface ahead. It seems as if a shallow river of green light is flowing above your head. Thousands of glowworms shimmer within the cave, sparkling like stars, making you feel as though you are standing under a “starry sky.” The green lights resemble a sky full of twinkling stars. In denser areas, they layer upon layer; in sparser patches, tiny dots of light appear. From a distance, it’s as if you’re gazing at a scattering of countless illuminated homes, with the “stars” reflecting off the water like a mirror studded with beads—an absolutely breathtaking sight that showcases the wonders of nature.
