Hamilton Zoo

Hamilton Zoo is located in the western suburbs of Hamilton, Waikato Region. Established in 1969, it covers an area of 25 hectares and is the only zoo in Hamilton. Its most distinctive feature is housing the largest free-flight aviary in the Southern Hemisphere.

Hamilton Zoo has 93 species and approximately 400 animals, including over 50 species of birds from around the world, making it truly a paradise for birds. The birds in the aviary live in a free, open environment that simulates natural habitats, providing optimal conditions for their survival and breeding. The animals and birds include tuatara, New Zealand geckos, red pandas, brush-tailed rats, alpacas, siamangs, spider monkeys, Brazilian tapirs, North Island kaka, kea, morepork, honeyeaters, and the rare blue duck, among others. The zoo also offers scheduled animal shows daily, which are thrilling and highly entertaining.

Hamilton Zoo features cafes and restaurants that serve coffee, lunch, and cold drinks for visitors' convenience. The zoo is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM every day except Christmas, operating year-round.
