The Waikato Museum of Art and Culture is located on Victoria Street in the heart of Hamilton, Waikato Region. Established in 1987, it is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and showcasing the history and artworks of the Waikato region.

The museum is divided into 12 galleries, featuring both permanent and touring exhibitions, with a wide variety of exhibits that are truly enlightening. The collections can be categorized into four main areas: Tainui, Social History, Science, and Visual Arts. The Tainui collection includes over 30,000 items such as wood carvings, stone carvings, archaeological finds, taiaha (ceremonial staffs), Māori canoes, adzes, and flax weaving. The Social History section holds approximately 25,000 items, encompassing objects related to social history from early European settlers to the present day, as well as items connected to the history and development of the Waikato region, including dairy farming, coal mining, and timber. The Science collection is continually expanding and contains numerous historical specimens, such as the now-extinct huia bird and penguin fossils, as well as a large number of plant specimens. The Visual Arts section is particularly noteworthy, featuring over 3,000 artworks from the colonial period to the present, including sculptures, photographs, pottery, prints, oil paintings, and watercolours.

In addition to its permanent exhibitions, the Waikato Museum of Art and Culture regularly hosts a variety of special exhibitions to promote learning among the public. For visitors’ convenience, the museum also houses a café and some small entertainment facilities.
