When it comes to volcanoes, we can't help but think of volcanic eruptions. Although they have caused great destruction to humans to some extent, some volcanoes have become world-famous because of this — and Mount Ruapehu is one of them, also gaining attention due to being featured in films.

Mount Ruapehu is an active stratovolcano located at the southern end of the Taupo Volcanic Zone in New Zealand. It lies about 23 kilometers northeast of the town of Ohakune, southwest of Lake Taupo, and approximately 40 kilometers from the southern shore of the lake. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and the largest active volcano in New Zealand, having erupted multiple times. The mountain is home to New Zealand’s largest ski field and is a major destination for winter snow activities on the North Island. The Whakapapa Ski Field, the country’s largest and busiest, is situated on the northwest slopes of the volcano. Covering a total area of 550 hectares, the ski area also features chairlift facilities, making it one of the most famous ski resorts in the North Island — and indeed, all of New Zealand.

Mount Ruapehu also draws attention for its glaciers. Glaciers are found on its slopes, making it the only place in the North Island where glaciers can be seen, which is why many visitors hope to witness these icy wonders while skiing.
