Russell is a small town located in the Bay of Islands in New Zealand’s Northland Region. It was the first permanent European settlement and harbor in New Zealand, and is now a well-known fishing port and summer retreat. In the early 19th century, European settlers began to arrive in Russell. However, even before the Europeans came, Russell was an important gathering place for Māori. Before the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between the British and the Māori, Russell served as the first capital of the British colony in New Zealand.
