Mount Victoria

Introduction   Situated in the southwestern part of Wellington city, Mount Victoria preserves the office that was used by Prime Minister Seddon between 1893 and 1906. Seddon played an important role in New Zealand’s political legislation, notably making New Zealand the first country in the world where women gained the right to vote. Nearby Mount Victoria is Cook’s Monument Island, dedicated to British navigator Captain Cook, who visited New Zealand five times between 1769 and 1777. To the north of Mount Victoria lies the Kaingaroa State Forest, a man-made forest covering 150,000 hectares and stretching over 100 kilometers, making it one of the largest planted forests in the world.
