Wellington City & Sea Museum

The Wellington City & Sea Museum is located near Wellington Harbour. Established in 1972, it commemorates Wellington’s social, cultural, and maritime history, offering visitors an in-depth and comprehensive understanding of all aspects of the city.

As you step into the museum, you’ll be immersed in a sea of Wellington’s history. Outstanding exhibitions include the 1968 shipwreck, 101 Stories of 20th Century Wellington, and one of the public's favourite sections, the Māori mythological tale "A Thousand Years Ago." There are also dedicated displays on Wellington’s maritime history and culture. The museum features films showcasing early powered sailing ships, allowing visitors to see the interior structures and workings of these vessels up close.

The Wellington City & Sea Museum is free to visit and is open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm every day of the year except Christmas Day.
