To help more people understand this skilled trade, New Zealand has even established a national sheep shearing museum, located in the town of Masterton in the Wellington region, which is very popular with visitors.

The history of sheep in New Zealand dates back over 160 years to the time of British colonization. The pioneers who came here in search of new opportunities first brought sheep to New Zealand in 1773. Since then, they began to cultivate the barren land, transforming it into lush green pastures. It is said that there are now over 30 breeds of sheep raised in New Zealand, 58% of which are Romney sheep—an excellent breed suitable for both wool production and meat. Meanwhile, Merino sheep produce the highest quality wool. Visiting this museum, guests can learn about typical wool sheds from ancient times to the present, the history of wool and its tremendous impact on New Zealand, wool spinning and weaving, as well as various clothing items made from wool.

Visitors can also watch shearers in action—sheep shearing has become a renowned international sport and is also a highly demanding job. It is said that skilled shearers can shear a sheep in just 1 to 2 minutes.
