Cape Palliser Lighthouse

Cape Palliser Lighthouse is located at Cape Palliser, a well-known tourist destination in the Wellington region. It is owned and operated by Maritime New Zealand. Built in 1897, it initially used an oil lamp, which was replaced by an electric light in 1954, and then by a mains electricity system in 1967.

The lighthouse is 18 meters high and became fully automated in 1986. Climbing to the top is no easy feat — visitors must ascend 250 steps to reach the base of the lighthouse, and then climb a staircase to the top. From the summit, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Palliser Bay and the South Island. The sea displays varying shades of blue, creating an incredibly beautiful scene that’s hard to leave.
