The Featherston Steam Train Museum is located in the small town of Featherston in the Wellington region and was opened in 1955. It is a museum dedicated to collecting, preserving, and showcasing steam locomotives from the Rimutaka Incline, and has become one of the world’s recognized tourist attractions.

The Featherston Steam Train Museum houses H199, the only locomotive of its kind in the world, which was designed for use on the Rimutaka Incline and made a significant contribution to the railway. Through a wealth of photographs, models, historical records, films, and creatively designed audiovisual presentations, the museum tells the legendary history of the Rimutaka Incline, allowing you to step back in time and experience the unique railway heritage of New Zealand. The museum is open from 9:30 to 14:00 on weekdays, and from 10:00 to 16:00 on weekends and public holidays. It is closed on Christmas Day and ANZAC Day. Every year, thousands of railway enthusiasts visit to explore the distinctive railway history and technology.
