Nestled in New Zealand’s Wellington Region along the Ruamahanga River, Masterton is the largest town in the Wairarapa region and its primary shopping and service hub. It is renowned for hosting the annual Golden Shears sheep shearing competition.

If you’re staying for a night or two, visit Queen Elizabeth Park, established in 1907 and considered the city’s most beautiful park, where you can enjoy lovely garden scenery. To the east of the city lies Castle Point, offering beach surfing, protected swimming areas, and walking trails. About 30 km north of Masterton, in the ancient forests of the Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre, a predator-free sanctuary aims to rescue many of New Zealand’s endangered bird species. Here you can watch the comical performances of brown kiwi, talk to takahē, observe giant eels and brown trout, or explore forest trails in search of black-backed gulls, weka birds, and tūī.

The Golden Shears sheep shearing competition held annually in Masterton every March attracts top shearers from across the country and is hailed as an artful ceremony, with dazzling contests that leave spectators in awe.
