Australian National Botanic Gardens

The Australian National Botanic Gardens are located at the foot of Black Mountain in Canberra. Established in 1949, they cover an area of 220 acres and are Australia's largest collection of native plants, as well as one of the country’s key botanical research resources.

The first plant was planted in the gardens in 1949, with large-scale development beginning in the 1960s and the gardens officially opening to the public in 1970. The Australian National Botanic Gardens house a scientifically collected array of native plants from various regions. These plants are not only for visitors to enjoy but are primarily used for taxonomic and biological research. Currently, the gardens cultivate around 90,000 plants representing over 5,500 different species, all labeled with their scientific and common names. The plants are grouped into eight distinct themed areas: the Rainforest Gully, Rock Garden, Sydney Region Flora, Mallee Plants, Proteaceae, Myrtaceae, Eucalypt Lawns, and Acacia. Visitors can choose which plant areas to explore based on their interests.

The Australian National Botanic Gardens also have a herbarium that houses plant specimens used for various scientific studies, though it is generally not open to the public. There is also a small gift shop where visitors can purchase souvenirs.
