Aegina Island

Introduction   Aegina Island is a lovely small island located in a bay near Athens. It is known for its pistachio production. The pistachios here are smaller than the ones we usually eat, but they have a rich and fragrant taste.

There are two ancient temples on the island. The Temple of Apollo was built between 520 BC and 500 BC. When viewed from the sea, it looks rather ordinary because its ruins face directly toward the ocean, but it is quite beautiful when seen from the mountain. The other temple, the Temple of Aphaia, is located at the top of the mountain and is dedicated to a nymph worshipped by the islanders. It is one of the most elegant examples of a late ancient Greek revival temple in Europe, built to commemorate the Battle of Salamis. Due to its very convenient transportation, it is a great place for a weekend getaway.
