The Parthenon

Introduction: The Parthenon is a Greek temple dedicated to the worship of the gods, primarily Athena, and is also known as the "Temple of Athena Parthenos." It was built between 447–438 BCE and was a key project in the reconstruction of the Acropolis during the rule of Pericles. The temple is located at the center of the Acropolis hill in the old town of Athens, situated at the highest point on the hill.

It is rectangular in shape, measuring 228 feet in length and 101 feet in width, and features a colonnade of 46 Doric columns. The main structure consists of two chambers, flanked by two porches each supported by six Doric columns. The eastern porch leads to the inner shrine, which originally housed a massive statue of the goddess Athena, although this masterpiece disappeared in the 5th century AD. The frieze is decorated with 92 white marble panels adorned with relief sculptures depicting scenes from Greek mythology. The pediments at the east and west ends of the roof also feature exquisite carvings. The Parthenon is regarded as the finest example of Doric architecture and is hailed as the "national treasure of Greece."
