Byzantine Museum

Introduction The museum is located in the Villa Ilisia, which was converted into a museum in 1930 to house artifacts from the Byzantine period spanning the 5th to 15th centuries. The museum is a two-story building, with the ground floor comprising a lobby and five exhibition rooms. The lobby displays sculptures from the 4th to 6th centuries featuring early Christian characteristics.

The second room is a reconstructed rectangular church dating from the 5th to 6th centuries. The third room is entirely dedicated to sculpture works from the Byzantine period between the 9th and 15th centuries. The fourth room is a reconstructed 11th-century Byzantine-style cross-shaped church. The fifth room is a replica of a later Byzantine church. The second floor also has a lobby and two exhibition rooms housing large-scale paintings. In front of the museum is a courtyard, centered around a large basin. Beneath the arcades on either side are 5th-century mosaics and various religious statues arranged by region and chronology.
