Temple of Erechtheion

The Temple of Erechtheion was built between 421 BC and 406 BC and is an ancient Greek architectural and cultural heritage site. It is one of the main structures of the Acropolis in Athens and is said to be the place where the goddess Athena and the sea god Poseidon competed in wisdom to become the patron deity of Athens. The Temple of Erechtheion is a classic representation of the Ionic style in the architecture of the Acropolis. Built on an uneven elevated site, its architectural design is remarkably ingenious. Within the composition of the Acropolis, it serves to balance the massive volume of the Parthenon, giving the entire structure a strong sense of harmony.

Integral to the Temple of Erechtheion is the Porch of the Caryatids (Caryatides), formed by six maiden statues serving as columns. It is said to represent six punished handmaidens and was constructed in 413 BC. The maidens wear belted dresses, appear light and airy, support immense weight atop their heads, and stand gracefully. The design is highly distinctive—since the maidens’ heads must bear the heavy roof, their necks could not be too slender. The designer added a strand of hair hanging from the necks to increase the surface area bearing the load without compromising beauty, and placed a basket of flowers on their heads as a column capital, successfully resolving an architectural aesthetic challenge. This has made it world-renowned.
