Theatre of Dionysus

The Theatre of Dionysus is an open-air theatre in Athens, Greece, and one of the oldest theatres in the world. During festivals, plays were performed here in honor of Dionysus, the god of wine and agriculture and the patron of drama. It was originally a pair of semi-circular theatres connected by a colonnade, built in 534 BC.

The Theatre of Dionysus could accommodate 25,000 people, with every seat offering clear audibility of the performances on stage. Playwrights from the Classical period participated here, including the renowned Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, and Menander. A larger stone-built theatre was constructed in 325 BC, featuring between 14,000 and 17,000 seats. It later fell into disuse and was rarely mentioned in records until Emperor Nero carried out significant restorations in 61 AD. What remains today are the ruins of the rebuilt Roman theatre. After it was deemed unsuitable for holding the Athenian Assembly, the Theatre of Dionysus was occasionally used as a venue for meetings.
