Ancient Agora Ruins

The Ancient Agora ruins were the commercial and civic center of ancient Athens, built between the 2nd century BC and the 2nd century AD. Most of the other buildings have been preserved only very fragmentarily.

Most structures in the Ancient Agora ruins are now little more than crumbling walls, making it impossible to discern their original forms. The area’s buildings and temples once bore the footprints of great philosophers and statesmen. The restored Stoa of Attalos was originally a marketplace built in the 2nd century BC and now houses a museum showcasing historical artifacts depicting daily life in ancient Greece. The only relatively well-preserved building is the Temple of Hephaisteion, which stands majestically with balanced proportions and great aesthetic appeal.
