Xinpingbao Town is an ancient town with a long cultural history and strong frontier atmosphere. For millennia, northern ethnic minorities such as the Xiongnu and Khitan coexisted with the Han people on this land, shaping a historical journey from conflict to harmony between ethnic groups. This has formed a distinctive cultural character that integrates military, farming, and nomadic cultures, fostering a rich frontier ambiance and unique borderland ethnic culture. Though prominent for its military role, Xinpingbao Town flourished through commerce and was once known as part of the “Ancient Tea Horse Road.” It served as a bustling trade hub at the junction of Shanxi, Hebei, and Inner Mongolia (the three provinces/regions), and its thriving commercial activity remains one of its proudest historical legacies. Today, the North Street of Xinpingbao Town remains a vibrant commercial thoroughfare. Though only two steps wide, the street is lined with numerous shops offering a wide variety of goods. The well-preserved ancient buildings along the street silently recount the history of yesteryear, while over 100 classic Ming and Qing dynasty structures in the town stand out for their distinctive charm, narrating the prosperity of the past and representing rare gems among residential architecture. Every year on the 18th day of the fifth lunar month, a trade fair is held here, drawing villagers from nearby Hebei and Inner Mongolia for a lively market gathering.
