Haide Ancient City
Haide Ancient City is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
Haide Ancient City is located 48.3 km southwest of Loulan Ancient City. It was the second-largest city in the Lop Nur region during the Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties, second only to Loulan. The city’s north-south walls are 107 meters long, the east-west walls are about 190 meters long, and the total area is approximately 20,000 square meters.
The area around Haide Ancient City is another concentration of ruins in the Lop Nur region. About 3 km to its northwest lies the LL Ancient City, and 4.8 km further northwest is the LM residential site. Cultural relics authorities refer to Haide Ancient City as the Southern Lop Nur Ancient City. In 1914, when Aurel Stein explored the Lop Nur area, he named it the LK Site.
Haide Ancient City was first discovered in 1907 by Stein’s Uyghur guide, Tohta Akhun. In 1910, Japanese explorer Tachibana Zuicho found the Li Bo Documents here while exploring the Lop Nur area. At that time, he mistakenly believed this city to be Loulan Ancient City. In the same year, Chinese scholar Wang Guowei discovered during his research and translation of the Li Bo Documents that both items were marked with the name “Haide.” Japanese scholar Mori Shunsaku also confirmed through photographs provided by Tachibana Zuicho of the excavation site of the Li Bo Documents that this was not Loulan Ancient City but the LK Site. Later, people began referring to the Southern Lop Nur Ancient City, the LK Site, as “Haide Ancient City.” After the 30s of the 4th century AD, when Loulan City was abandoned, the administrative center of the Western Regions Protectorate was moved to Haide Ancient City.
