As you climb from the foot of the mountain, you’ll find countless rocks of all sizes embedded with shells—large as coins, small as thumbnails—whose outlines and textures are clearly visible. Hundreds of millions of these shells, fused together with saline and alkaline silt, form layered, ever-varying strata. According to experts, the Pamir Plateau was once beneath the ocean, and gradually rose to become land and then a plateau due to tectonic shifts, with the exposed shell fossils serving as evidence.
