Achikekule Volcano

Achikekule Volcano is located among the peaks of the Kunlun Mountains, 116 kilometers south of Yutian County. It is the youngest volcano on the Chinese mainland, having erupted as recently as May 27, 1951. The volcano stands at an elevation of 4,923 meters, with a crater diameter of about 100 meters. The surrounding area is covered in gray-black volcanic lava and ash, and apart from sparse patches of a low-growing plant called highland ceratoides, there is no other green life to be found.
