Shenchi is known for its strong winds. Historical records state that “during particularly windy days, the wind can blow cattle and horses sideways, or even lift them two to three zhang (approximately six to nine meters) into the air before dropping them.”

According to measurements taken by Shanxi International Power Company at several sites, the average wind speed in Shenchi is 9.7 meters per second, with a maximum speed reaching 13.7 meters per second.

The county Party committee and government seized the opportunity, actively managed the project, and with strong support from leaders at all levels and relevant departments, secured a 480 MW wind power project. The first phase of the project involves an investment of 480 million yuan, with 24 generating units installed, and the preliminary site selected at Bayanliang, southeast of the county town. Wind measurement work has now been completed, the project has been approved by the Provincial Development and Reform Commission, and construction began in June 2007, with the first phase scheduled to be completed within the year. Once completed, Bayanliang will feature not only fields of yellow flowers but also gently turning wind turbines, creating a unique cultural landscape.
