Memorial Monument to Premier Zhou Enlai

The Memorial Monument to Premier Zhou Enlai is a cultural tourism attraction, a classic red tourism site, and a base for patriotic education.

The Memorial Monument to Premier Zhou Enlai is situated in the northern suburbs of Shihezi City, 3 kilometers from the city center. To the south of the monument is the Premier Memorial Hall, and to the north is the Memorial Museum. The front of the monument is inscribed with twelve golden characters: “Eternal Glory to the Beloved Premier Zhou Enlai.” The southern side features an inscription of the premier’s message during his 1965 inspection of the Production and Construction Corps, while the northern side contains excerpts from his government work report delivered at the Third National People’s Congress. The back features the inscription commemorating the establishment of the monument. Overall, the monument stands tall and dignified, with a solemn and simple yet powerful design. The flowers and pine trees in front of the monument lend a sense of warmth and reverence.

On July 5, 1965, Premier Zhou Enlai and Vice Premier Chen Yi visited Shihezi to inspect the work and met with representatives of Shanghai youths who had moved to support border areas. On January 8, 1976, Premier Zhou passed away. To commemorate his great achievements, the Party Committee of the Farm decided to build a memorial monument. The site was chosen where Premier Zhou had met with the Shanghai representatives. Premier Zhou lived to the age of 78, so the monument was built to a height of 7.8 meters. He was 67 years old during his visit to Shihezi, hence the text on the monument is positioned at a height of 6.7 meters. Later, the Premier Memorial Hall was added, and the original exhibition hall was expanded into the Memorial Museum of Premier Zhou Enlai.

Zhou Enlai was a Marxist, proletarian revolutionary, statesman, military strategist, and diplomat. He was one of the principal leaders of the Communist Party of China and the People’s Republic of China, one of the founders of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, and the Premier of the People’s Republic of China (1949–1976). Originally from Shaoxing, Zhejiang, he was born in Huai’an, Jiangsu. In 1917, after graduating from Nankai School in Tianjin, he went to Japan to study. In 1919, he returned to China and entered Nankai University in September.
